Construction work is due to begin on the 760 ha (1,878ac) JTP-designed "Ecopolis" eco-district in Kazan, Russia, which is aimed at promoting a lifestyle of health and wellbeing.

Sited on a former artillery base in the city's Kirov district, the masterplan takes advantage of its forest setting and proximity to the River Volga.

It is laid out as a landscaped ring with a series of clustered developments around which there are public spaces, meeting areas and playgrounds.

Ivana Stanisic, associate at JTP, said: "The concept seeks to preserve as much forest as possible and focuses on sustainable transport with high-quality walking, cycling and public transport networks.

"As JTP focuses on creating places where life in all senses can flourish, it was important to ensure that every home is surrounded by or within a short walking distance from any green space.

"The concept for homes is inspired by local traditions and as such homes are designed around courtyards and provide flexibility for multi-generational living. We're really excited to see the scheme come to life."

JTP's winning proposal was chosen from more than 47 entries following a 2018 design competition.

Its design was developed through a collaborative process with the local community, which included workshops and a site visit.

Infrastructure design is currently being finalised, with construction work due to begin in the first half of 2020.

The masterplan was created in collaboration with Knight Frank, XTU Architects, OXO Architects, Architectural Dessant and Terra Scape.
